Course Introduction

(국문): 이 강좌는 우리가 즐겨 듣는 K-POP부터 오래된 국악까지, 한국 음악을 철학의 눈으로 함께 들여다보는 수업입니다. 한국 음악이 어떻게 외래 문화를 받아들이면서도 자기만의 색을 지켜왔는지를 차근차근 살펴보면서 장단, 악기, 감정 표현, 의례음악 같은 요소들을 통해 한국적인 사고방식이 음악 속에 어떻게 녹아 있는지 알아봅니다. 이 수업을 듣는 동안 여러분은 음악과 철학이 번갈아 대화를 나누듯, 듣고 생각하고 다시 듣는 과정을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 한국 음악을 “과거의 전통”이 아니라 “지금도 살아 움직이는 문화”로 바라보고자 하는 학생들, 한국 음악을 조금 더 깊이 이해하고 싶은 학생들이라면 누구나 편안하게 참여할 수 있는 강좌입니다.   (영문): This course explores Korean music—from the K-pop we enjoy today to long-standing traditional music—through a philosophical lens. By gradually examining how Korean music has embraced outside influences while preserving its own distinctive character, the course looks at how Korean ways of thinking are embedded in music through elements such as rhythm, instruments, emotional expression, and ritual music. As you take this class, you will experience a process of listening, thinking, and listening again, as if music and philosophy were taking turns in conversation. This course invites students to see Korean music not as a tradition of the past, but as a living culture that continues to move and evolve, and warmly welcomes anyone who wishes to gain a deeper understanding of Korean music.

Course Introduction

When we think about Korean Thought or Korean Philosophy, much of the focus tends to be on the distinguished figures, their writings, and their intellectual debates. Korean Political Thought, however, while not entirely overlooked, remains relatively underexplored, and perhaps, underappreciated. But, we should remember that most Korean Confucians were not merely intellectuals. They aspired to put their ideas into action, trying to realize an ideal Confucian society. In that sense, they were also politicians, either with or without government participation. As such, they are often referred to as scholar-officials. It is, therefore, crucial to understand what their political visions were, how their ideas influenced Korean society, and what we can learn from them to make our world a better place. This lecture series, featuring eight thought-provoking sessions, offers a valuable introduction to Korean Political Thought. It is designed to engage everyone, both those already familiar with Korean philosophy and those encountering it for the first time.

Course Introduction

This lecture series aims to explore our emotional landscape through the lens of the renowned Korean Confucian scholar, Seongho Yi Ik(星湖 李瀷, 1683- 1761) who lived through Joseon Dynasty, Korea. The Confucian project can be summarized as “Learning to be Human,” which involves not just biological development but also cultural and moral cultivation. Seongho emphasized the importance of emotional education as a crucial aspect of the Confucian cultivation program. Emotions play a significant role in understanding others and being understood, making them essential for navigating complex relationships and engaging with the world meaningfully. This series will delve into Seongho’s short yet profoundly insightful work on emotions, the New Compilation of the Four-Seven Debate (Sachil sinpyeon). His approach challenges us to think critically about our own emotional lives, how our emotions guide our moral choices, shape our relationships, and ultimately define who we become. By engaging with these lectures with curiosity and reflection, Seongho’s insights will not only enrich your understanding of Confucian moral psychology but also offer practical wisdom for leading a better life.

Course Introduction

In the “Exploration to Korean Philosophy” series, we will delve deeper into the subject matter than what was previously addressed in the courses “Introduction to Korean Philosophy and Culture (IKPC)” and “In Search for the Origins of Korean Philosophy (SOKP).” In EKP2, “Formation of “Korean” Neo-Confucianism,” is a course that zooms in on the era when Korean philosophy blossomed and looks into detailed topics. Here we will look at the debate between Buddhism and Confucianism, the diagrams that Koreans drew to capture the world and explore the inner self of humans, and the philosophy of salvation through the heart, which is the goal of these attempts.

Course Introduction

In the “Exploration to Korean Philosophy” series, we will delve deeper into the subject matter than what was previously addressed in the courses “Introduction to Korean Philosophy and Culture (IKPC)” and “In Search for the Origins of Korean Philosophy (SOKP)." In EKP1, titled "Modernity and the Emergence of 'Korean' Philosophy," we explore how the Korean intellectual tradition encountered a pivotal moment of reinterpretation as it embraced the discipline of "philosophy," often seen as the apex of modern European intellectual history. Looking at examples of Concept Clusters, we can see that Korean philosophy is deeply rooted in the Korean language and has formed a philosophical perspective that is different not only from the West but also from neighboring countries such as China and Japan. In this course, we also dealt with the early Korean Neo-Confucianism's gaze on “cheon”, referring to “heaven” as an example that clearly demonstrates the characteristics of Korean philosophy before it was given the name “philosophy.” Even before and after the advent of Neo-Confucianism, the search for ultimate existence – expressed in various terms – was constantly pursued. The gaze on “heaven” is an important feature of Korean philosophy.

Anyone interested in Korean culture through K-dramas or K-pop, or interested in philosophy from a multicultural perspective, is welcome. While interest in Korean culture is growing, few courses explore the fascinating subject of Korean philosophy. This course introduces the concepts of Korean philosophy through an exploration of the Korean language, culture, and perspectives. Korea's cultural, social, and political environment has influenced and shaped intellectual capital in China and the West. By exploring the creative tensions experienced by Koreans and discovering new philosophical approaches, you will broaden your worldview.

내 생각이 바뀌면 삶이 바뀌고 세상이 바뀐다. 삶의 변화, 세상의 변화를 ‘나’의 변화에서 시작했던 공자의 사상과 공자의 생애 속에서 어떻게 공자처럼 생각하고 살아갈지 살펴보는 강좌이다. 수천 년간 동아시아 정치‧사회를 이끌었던 유학 사상의 출발점인 공자의 핵심 사상을 공자의 생각법으로 풀어내어, 공자 철학에 대한 이해와 우리 일상 속 적용을 함께 도모해 볼 수 있는 강좌로 구성되었다. 구체적으로 공자의 근원적 생각법, 중용적 생각법, 실천적 생각법, 전환적 생각법으로 구성되었다. 이를 통해 공자의 핵심 철학을 쉽게 이해하고 공자처럼 사회문제‧삶의 문제를 제대로 바라보고 실천하는 법, 변화무쌍한 삶 속에서 균형을 잡아가는 법, 위기를 기회로 전환하는 생각법을 이해할 수 있다. When my thoughts change, my life changes, and the world changes. This course explores how to think and live like Confucius by examining his philosophy and life, which began with the belief that personal transformation leads to changes in life and the world. As the starting point of Confucian thought, which shaped East Asian politics and society for thousands of years, the core ideas of Confucius are presented through his way of thinking. The course is designed to promote both an understanding of Confucian philosophy and its practical application in daily life. The course is structured around four key approaches: Foundational Thinking, Balanced Thinking, Practical Thinking, Transformative Thinking. Through this course, learners will gain a clear understanding of Confucius’ essential ideas and learn how to approach social and personal issues with wisdom, maintain balance in an ever-changing world, and adopt a mindset that transforms challenges into possibilities.
