Course Introduction

This course examines the history and culture of Seoul(Hanseoung, Hanyang), the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, by dividing it into five districts: East, South, West, North, and Central. It reviews the current research achievements in the humanities and arts related to Hanyang and fosters the ability to uncover new materials through literature. By conducting on-site visits to artifacts and historic sites, the course aims to reconstruct the past image of Hanyang, explore the cultural origins of modern-day Seoul, and cultivate the humanistic knowledge necessary to design a better future. Through these field studies, students will rediscover the cultural legacy of Hanyang and its connection to contemporary Seoul. This lecture will be conducted as a team-teaching course.

As the starting point of Confucian thought, which shaped East Asian politics and society for thousands of years, the core ideas of Confucius are presented through his way of thinking. The course is designed to promote both an understanding of Confucian philosophy and its practical application in daily life. The course is structured around four key approaches: Foundational Thinking, Balanced Thinking, Practical Thinking, Transformative Thinking. 수강신청 바로가기 한국 문화와 사상의 주요 기반을 형성하였던 조선시대 성리학을 시대적 변화에 따른 핵심 쟁점을 통해 이해하려는 것이다. 먼저 14세기 주자학의 수용과 정착과정에서 유불논쟁을 시작으로 일상의 윤리를 강조한 유교 지식인의 사유를 살펴본다. 특히 16세기에 한국 성리학의 방향을 선도했던 퇴계와 율곡의 성리학은 사단칠정논쟁과 인심도심논쟁으로 활발해지고, 18세기 호락논쟁으로 이어지면서 한국성리학의 정체성을 형성한다. 또한 19세기 유교 지식인의 서학의 충격에 따른 동도서기논쟁을 검토하고, 20세기 한국 근대 유교개혁론의 전반적 양상 속에서 전개된 심설논쟁의 의미를 살펴본다. 이처럼 시대에 조응하려는 유교 지식인의 대표적 논쟁을 이해하는 것은 한국인의 정체성 해명과 미래 지향적 보편가치를 모색하는 계기가 될 것이다.
